Andalucia Day 27 Chiclana de la Frontera
Chiclana de la Frontera is the other side of Cadiz bay. It's market day but there is an enormous and free car park five minutes walk from the centre and just across the river from the market. We haven't seen a market since Ventimiglia so have a look but there is nothing in particular to tempt us.
Next stop the Wine and Salt Interpretation museum Centro de Interpretacion del Vino y la sal. This is very detailed, modern and well set out, with lots of information and even the opportunity to test your nose by sniffing smells in a bottle to guess what they are and hence whether you would be a good winetaster. My only contribution is to say I know that smell but I don't know what it is whereas Andrea gets three out of five right. He has been having more practice...
The Mercado de Abastos is just next door and an exceptionally good one, clean and cool but packed with stalls and an enormous variety of fish at cheap prices.
We then wander off to the local museum where there's an exhibition of art related to bullfighting but by now we are tired of standing around looking at things so we go back to the bars outside the market for lunch. On the way we go through Plaza Mayor, the main square with the old clock tower, church and, inexplicably, a multistorey carpark on one side, which, unfortunately, looks pretty much like a multistorey carpark.
After lunch, once again with tapas, we go to Spiaggia la Barrosa, quite a few people and deservedly so, clear white sand, blue green water and a backdrop of cliffs and a tower. Not surprisingly in a municipality which considers parking a priority, there are large and free car parks right in front of the beach.
Last stop of the day, Sancti Petri beach with the island and castle in the distance for a rest and to await the sunset, with its interesting rocks made of shells and the old causeway stretching out towards the island.
