Andalucia Day 1 Alps to Ventimiglia
Departure day has arrived. After three months of intermittent planning we are ready to not do exactly as planned after all and so we set off three days earlier, destination Ventimiglia. Packing is an art, whether the minimalism required for Ryanair's latest hand luggage rules or the Honda Jazz with all the necessary for a few weeks of camping. In this case we also have several kilos of tomatoes in various degrees of ripeness to complicate the grand plan. Nevertheless, I give myself 8 out of 10, the tomatoes seem unlikely to get squashed and we set off just past 9 o'clock (later than planned, obviously) first step Decathlon Brescia for an 'instant' tent for our shorter stopovers.
We get to Osteria La Moretta in Ziano Piacentino for lunch. Solid country fare, spaghetti con ragù nostrano, zuppa di farro, salsiccia con purè, manzo padellato con finocchi gratinati, water, wine, coffee 24 euros all inclusive for two people. We emerge at two o'clock considerably fortified and ready for anything, even though the menu was perhaps more appropriate for a foggy November day than a balmy September afternoon when the thermometer shows 29 degrees.
The rest of the journey goes smoothly, taking turns in driving. We arrive in Ventimiglia, Latte, actually, at Camping Por La Mar at about 5. The receptionist is pleasant and the 2 seconds Quechua tent lives up to its name. In the meantime we are assaulted by mosquitoes, pazienza. The big advantage of the campsite we discover as we stroll around nearby, mosquito free, is that it's just 5 minutes on foot from Spiaggia di Latte.

The sun has gone behind a stray cloud, the waves are noisy over one or two last bathers lying in the surf, an elderly fisherman is putting away his gear. Peace.
The other more prosaic advantage of the campsite is that it's just across the road from an un-inspiring looking but actually excellent, well-stocked and cheap Conad supermarket. We add bread, ricotta, Ligurian olives to the awaiting tomatoes and turn off the light for the night. Even the mosquitoes have called it a day.
