Andalucia Day 2 Ventimiglia
Things don't happen by chance and so after being ready too late for the local bus from Latte to Ventimiglia, and not wanting to wait for the campsite shuttle bus, we set off on foot for Ventimiglia. Information on the Internet was lacking on this bit of Sentiero Liguria. In the end we find the indications just before Spiaggia di Latte. They take us along some pleasant narrow ways between the railway and the sea, a short stretch on the main road - not so good but there's a pavement, and then on to a minor road to Ventimiglia alta and down to the sea. There are spectacular views of the coast below, steep and rocky in most points, and towards France. All in all a pleasant walk and about one hour later we are strolling through the large and famous weekly market in Ventimiglia. All the usual things but also a lot of leather goods and a man making crickets out of grass. We walk back along the seafront and find a shady bench with sea view and cooling breeze for a picnic lunch of Focaccia di Recco, traditional but nothing special, and pizza with sausage and gorgonzola, untraditional and very tasty. Oh yes, I brought along a few tomatoes.
After coffee we walk up to Ventimiglia alta. The historical centre is pleasant, less rebuilt and repainted than other villages we've seen on the Riviera, definitely worth a visit for the narrow streets of tall old houses, the views and the cathedral, simple unadorned stone, beautiful inside and out, an unusual baptismal font.
It was open even mid-afternoon and entry is free. We wander around the back to see the various additions in different styles. After a rest in the shade on a convenient bench we walk back to the campsite.
