Sardinia in May Capo Coda Cavallo, Cala Brandinchi and Lu Impostu Beaches

On Wednesday we drive past San Teodoro to the turning on the right (heading towards Olbia) for Cala Brandinchi and Lu Impostu. Last year the car park was still free, but we now find out that as of May 15th it is working and you have to pay. So we don’t, we turn round and head for Capo Coda Cavallo.

We get there quite early and even though the wind is still from the northwest and it’s breezy and there are waves, we find a small sub-cove just for us and set up sun umbrella and a sun lounger.  The beach itself is sandy and soft but the best thing about the bay is the view of Tavolara and other small islands directly in front and the way the colour of the water changes continuously according to the clouds and amount of sun. It’s fascinating.

There are quite a lot of people, some motorhomes were parked and there’s a mini bar which also rents canoes and pedalos and I’m not the only person in the water. Parking here is still free, which may encourage people.

We stocked up with prosciutto crudo pepato di Irgoli and all the other necessities for a picnic and since it isn’t too sunny and it isn’t too hot we spend most of the day there. I swim in the morning and nearly in the afternoon, only a dark cloud stops me, we go for a stroll, we read, the day passes lazily.

At about four we drive to the southern end of Lu Impostu beach where parking is still free, maybe to the end of May, anyway still free on 21st May, and from there we walk all along the Lu impostu beach and then to the far end of Cala Brandinchi where I swim again. There’s quite a lot of seaweed on both beaches. Very few people on Lu Impostu, a lot more on Cala Brandinchi, maybe because it has become quite famous. However today the Caribbean effect doesn’t quite work because of all the seaweed. For swimming I preferred Capo Coda Cavallo because at Cala Brandinchi I need to go quite far from the shore before it gets deep enough to swim.

We stroll back in the now mellow sun. An excellent day.
