Sardinia in May Budoni Trip Report

Trip Report Budoni

We stayed in Budoni because it was a little further south than where we stayed the year before in Monte Petrosu. Also, the small villa was very good value for money with a nice view over the countryside in one direction and a glimpse of the sea in the other. This was through an agency, but they were very kind and helpful. The accommodation was in the Tanaunella area.

Budoni itself doesn’t offer much - a long street of shops with some bars and restaurants and the beach a little way away because there are stagni between the beach and the town. There’s a brand-new Eurospin and some other supermarkets but for local products we found Eurospar the best option.

Budoni beach has whitish sand and blue sea. In the end, it was not my favourite beach because there was quite a lot of seaweed and the beach was quite uncomfortable for walking. We mostly went to the small bay/beach of Porto Ainu which is partly occupied by massive amounts of seaweed at the north end, a windsurf-water sports beach club at the southern end, and a space in the middle which was swimmable and acceptable.

Sardinia in May Budoni Trip Report
Budoni was a central location for the places we wanted to visit:

Day 1 Monday

We left Santa Teresa Gallura at about 9.30, having planned to stop in Palau, but when we got to the roundabout to go to Palaua we found the only traffic jam in the whole of Sardinia heading in that direction. We gave up and drove straight on and ended up stopping at the Spazio Conad supermarket in Olbia for some shopping.

Our apartment was in a small block of Villette a two minute walk from Pineta Sant’Anna and was very very nice. It was only built in 2024 and has three porticos outside, one of which has a very pleasant view over th hills behind Budoni. There’s also a glimpse of the sea on the other side. Not exactly a sea view, but enough to know if it’s rough or not. We booked through an agency Obiettivo Vacanze Budoni. They were efficient and welcoming, an excellent combination and at 12.30 we were already settling in. It was very windy and so we relaxed on the terrace a while, it was just so nice, and eventually summoned the energy to explore the Sant’Anna beach which we had already visited last year. The wind was still strong, whipping up the fine sand almost in our faces but we walked a little way along before returning to the area near the pineta to relax. No sunset that evening, but a very pleasant supper outside as the light faded and the sun disappeared behind the hills.

Day 2 Tuesday

We woke up to cloud and a little rain on Tuesday morning. Also, we were lazy from the comfort of the villetta so we just relaxed in the morning and when the rain cleared up we went to Budoni to do some shopping for food. Eurospin was disappointing but there’s a newish Eurospar which has some local products, so I got sheep and pork. The fish, as in all the other places we’ve been this time in Sardegna costs more than it costs at home in the mountains without looking any fresher.

After lunch we walked to Porto Ainu beach which, despite the seaweed at the northern part, is actually a very nice bay. I swam and then we relaxed in the sun

Day 3 On Wednesday we spent most of the day at Capo Coda Cavallo, sunbathing, enjoying the views and swimming. There were a few people but it wasn’t too busy. It gets the wind from the north but the waves calmed down as the day progressed. Late afternoon we parked near Lu Impostu  beach and walked along it and beyond until the far end of Cala Brandinchi where I swam, although the water is very shallow for quite a long way out. Parking was paid if you wanted to park in the car park between Cala Brandinchi and Li Impostu, still free at Coda Cavallo and at the south end of Lu Impostu.

Day 4 On Thursday we hiked from Berchida to Biderosa along the beach. Beautiful beach, rocky landscape and Mediterranean vegetation behind, very few people – a splendid day of sea and nature

Day 7 Since it was Sunday and the beaches were busy in the morning we did a short hike along the coast from Pineta Sant’Anna to Porto Ainu and Baia Sant’Anna. In the afternoon we relaxed back at base and then went for a walk in the Pineta

Day 8 On Monday we hiked along coast from Capo Comino (Spiaggia Moletto) towards Berchida, stopping at Cala Tamerici. If I’d known the path was so easy to walk along, I’d have taken a picnic and got as far as Berchida. In the afternoon the sun was fierce and it was hot – nearly 30° so we retreated back to the villetta.

Day 9 On Tuesday we went back to Capo Coda Cavallo but it was windy so we hiked along to the end of the promontory, and then stopped in Cala Suareccia for a while. In the afternoon we went back to Porto Ainu

Day 10 On Wednesday we did a hot and not very successful hike along the coast north of Porto Ottoliu and concluded with a final swim and beach time at Porto Ainu.

We enjoyed our days there very much, partly because it was a good base for the stunning beaches we wanted to visit, and also the accommodation, just a hundred metres from the pinewood and beach was very nice indeed, with a pleasant view over the countryside and a hint of a sunset.
