Sardinia in May Berchida Bidderosa Hiking along the beach
Many years ago we walked through the Oasi di Biderosa and onto a beach straight out of a film, sea so light blue to be almost white, white sand and green pine woods and red rocks behind. Back then, about 20 years ago, the area was already a nature reserve but you could only access it on foot or by bike. That time we went on foot, several kilometres before reaching the beach.
Things change. Now, the nature reserve has a network of dirt roads and an online booking system with limited capacity, but in fact it means you can get to these splendid beaches by car.
We are coming from the north and are not keen to spend 10/15 euros to do many extra kilometers by car, so we turn left off the main road (in the direction of Orosei) at Berchida beach. There’s a dirt road here too, about 3 kilometers and quite bumpy. But at the end there’s a large car park. The payment system starts from 1st June (2025) so now in May it’s still free. There are a lot of motorhomes and a few cars. From here we plan to walk south, the nearest beach of the Biderosa Oasi is number 5 to the north of the Nature Reserve.
We park, and are undecided. Do we just go for a walk towards Biderosa and then come back and get the umbrella and sunlounger to picnic on the beach nearby? In the end we leave the beach equipment in the car and set off just with beach towels and our picnic. The beach is beautiful – white sand, pine trees behind, red rocks, blue sea, only a few people.
We head south towards the Biderosa area. It’s nice walking on the beach. It slopes towards the sea a little and there are occasional stones and rocks and we make such good progress that when we arrive at what I think is the splendid beach which corresponds to parking area 5, it’s actually the splendid beach which corresponds to parking area 2, so a lot further south than I expected and splendid beach number 5 is not that noticeable as being distinct from the rest of the coastline. So we’ve walked a lot further than I’d expected – there’s no phone signal in much of this area and even our position on google maps was not correct.
The second surprise is not that there is somebody on the splendid beach which corresponds to parking area 2, (you can get there by car…..even if you do have to pay), but that there are a lot of people on the beach – a class of teenage students by the look of it. A class of local teenage students have more right to be on their beach than me…..but they’re playing football on the shore and the wild effect is rather lost. We carry on to the final beach number 1 and then start to walk back. I’m beginning to regret bringing picnic and swimming gear since it looks like I won’t be doing either, but then we find the perfect place with the perfect view and just enough shade and breeze but not too cool and windy and good Caribbean effect view and I swim and we stay the rest of the day.
Well, nearly. On the way back we stop in Posada, which has a few interesting corners but nothing stunning so is quite quick to visit, then home for food. We’re hungry.
