Puglia in May - Giovinazzo
On Wednesday we drive to Giovinazzo and after a deviation to see the coast a little, before the town, park near the sea front. Once again it's not our first visit. We book for lunch in a restaurant Sgnvzz, because when we stop by to look at the menu the waiter tells us it's better to book. The rest of the morning is spent strolling around the historical centre and along the sea front and little harbour. This time we also have a look inside the two churches which are both open. Giovinazzo is another of our many favourite places in Puglia, the contrast between the pale local stone and deep blue sea and sky is always scenographic.
It's smaller and quieter than Trani. We arrive back at the restaurant at 12.30 to find we are the only customers. The restaurant concentrates on quality and local products and prices accordingly. We have one starter between the two of us: roast octopus with crunchy capocollo, good, and a frittura mista, also very good. With a calice di vino and water the bill comes to 53 euros. Is it a lot? I don't know. We've eaten well and enough for lunch and we'll leave it at that. Although I'm a little surprised that after being told to book we are still the only customers....
For coffee we go to a tiny bar with tables outside on the harbour side. The owner is efficient and friendly and we chat to another customer who likes taking his sailing boat to Greece, a crossing of four days....
After another look around the historical centre, finding more interesting sights,we head back to Trani stopping at a shopping centre with a Co-op on the way to stock up on olives.
Later, after an early supper we go to the cathedral to look at the sunset and then wander the town in the light of dusk, with the lights coming on and the sky and the sea the same colour. Spectacular
