Gargano Vieste in May, trip report
We have visited Vieste several times before, but always in the autumn. We come back because it's a relaxing place to be. We like the beauty of the small town of Vieste itself, the splendid 3km long Scialara beach of golden sand and clean sea which stays shallow for quite a few metres, the lack of people out of season, the moderate price of accommodation in bungalow type residences a couple of hundred metres from the beach often with beach facilities included.
This time we arrive before the Lido has opened, but we have a sunbed and sun umbrella with us so we take advantage to visit a few different beaches. Parking along Scialara is free until the end of May and is easy also elsewhere because it's still low season. This time we:
- spend a whole day at Mannacora, including a walk in the morning
- Walk from the north of Vieste to the San Lorenzo beach, a short and easy walk
- actually get out in the evening to visit Vieste by night (well, evening, although it isn't as nice as Trani).....
- stroll the streets of the historical centre by day
Have an afternoon trip to Foresta Umbra where we repeat a walk we did before in the autumn.
And of course........walk up and down Scialara beach
May is a good time to visit Vieste too, although, since we had had quite hot weather, by the last week in May there weren't many flowers along the coast and everything was already quite dry. There were lots of interesting vegetables and fruit at the small farmers' market in the main town centre car park, especially broad beans, strawberries and apricots. The weather was warm enough for sunbathing and even swimming, but weather always depends on luck. Few people around......and that long beach to walk up and down.......
See you next time Vieste!
