Sardinia in May Hiking Rena Maiore to Cala Pischina

On Monday morning, surprisingly, it rains. When it stops, we quickly go to the Despar supermarket in Santa Teresa for frozen veg and pizzas and some local meat - pecora and pork chops.

I cook the sheep slices in the oven with the potatoes we bought at the market in Valledoria and some aubergines. Tasty, not superb but flavourful considering I cooked them quite quickly.

In the afternoon we go to do one of our favourite walks from last year and previous years. From Rena Maiore to Cala Pischina. The parking is still free and there are just a couple of other cars, although when we look back on Rena Maiore beach from the path to cala Pischina the bar on the beach seems to be already open.

It’s an easy walk, a very short seep section because there’s a rocky outcrop and back down the other side and then we just follow the path nearest the coast. Behind there’s a track wide enough for a car for part of the way. We are hoping in expanses or deep pink flowers but there are just a few here and  there. The same flowers we loved the year before and others do not disappoint.

We meet nobody as we walk along past little sandy coves, rocks, the ‘usual’ deep blue sea of Sardinia. It’s not hot even though it’s sunny and the wind from the west is strong but at Cala Pischina we find a sheltered corner and sunbathe a little. There’s another couple on the beach who probably came down from the parking near the bar above as they have their motorbike gear with them.

Walking back directly to the Rena Maiore car park takes us about 45 minutes. A beautiful afternoon. An easy supper too: frozen pizzas in the oven with extra topping. And then Capo Testa for the sunset, of course.
