Naples to Piombino

We leave Naples as if we were escaping, I pack the car the evening before and we are creeping out into the dark streets after a Sfogliatella for breakfast at 6.20. It's worth the early start. Naples hasn't woken up and despite a wrong turn we are soon out and onto the motorway. Perhaps we are happy to be moving on, perhaps it's time to head north, perhaps it's Saturday morning or perhaps it's because it's a whole week since I was behind a steering wheel but there seems to be little traffic and the 474 kilometres between our apartment in Naples and Agriturismo Torraccia fly by. We stop a couple of times, mostly to eat and once to stretch our legs and get some cash and are in our new apartment by two pm. Doing some washing ensues, and getting organized, and then we venture out to see the beach just 4 minutes down a lane and across the road from the apartment.

This is the Baratti end of the Rimigliano beach which we had visited in May and liked. But this end is just slightly shingly so not as good for walking. We do go to the far end but then come back and sit on a log in the warm sun and wait for the sunset. After Naples it seems like paradise.
