East Coast Sicily Day 22 - Fontane Bianche

Monday morning sees us back at the bus stop. It's our extra day and we are going to Fontane Bianche. In the end the first bus is also the one which was supposed to take us to Plemmirio near Varco 34. Mysteriously, today the bus takes its planned route and there are no roadworks in site.... Once in Fontane Bianche we immediately realise that the beach and sea were worth the trip. But it's still early so we go for a walk along the beach and then a short way along the coast. The sea is transparent and the coast peaceful and beautiful.
Coast near Fontane Bianche
In theory a short walk but by the time we get back to the beach as such it's getting on for lunchtime. We head to the very north where there's a free area near the boat club which also has some shade. There are a few people about, but mostly the other end where there are hotels and umbrellas and sunbeds. The temperature is perfect, the sea shallow, clean, transparent and warm. A long and extremely satisfying and relaxing swim ensues. Fontane bianche is a small bay so there are no waves and the water stays shallow enough for me to touch the bottom for quite a long way out.
Fontane Bianche beach
Spectacular. Even Andrea ventures in, which is high praise indeed.
We eat the picnic lunch of a very good Parma ham we bought in a corner shop in Ortigia at a much lower price than it would have been in Parma plus the excellent and cheap Sicilian bread. Then just sit and relax for a while.
Eventually we get up and go for a coffee at a bar which is right on the beach. There's also a restaurant and a small hotel with bedrooms from which you could almost access the beach directly. Time to look for the bus stop. The bus is a little late but everything goes smoothly for our trip back to Siracusa. I even snooze a little on the bus.
Since it's our last day when we arrive back in Ortigia we go to try a 'degustazione di granite', right in the main square opposite the statue of Diana but an excellent granita, or rather, selection of...... It's time for our last sunset in Ortigia, for this trip, because Ortigia is a special place and I hope we will be back.....
