East Coast Sicily Day 21 - Siracusa cycle path

The next day is a Sunday and so we decide to take it easy. After our usual splendid sunrise
Siracusa sunrise
we set off for our walk all around Ortigia. It's a beautifully sunny morning and the soft colours of the stone of the old buildings along the waterside are particularly pleasant.

We get round to Piazza Duomo in time to go into the cathedral for mass. It's a quiet and peaceful moment. After lunch, we had bought fish from Ortigia market the day before, we decide to go into Siracusa and walk along the cycle path along the coast. It's quite a long walk even to get to the cycle path and then the first part is between the sea and some admittedly nice views and large blocks of flats on the other side.

There are quite a few people walking, cycling or with their dogs. Occasionally there are some artistic benches with a sea view.

The cycle path follows the route of the old railway so the part furtherst from Siracusa also goes through a sort of embankment,

it's pleasant enough but nothing spectacular. Also, by the time we get back to the apartment, it's a very long walk. But we have enough energy for the sunset.....we have now found our favourite place with a bench and in the meantime observe the people. The gentleman on the same bench next to me is preparing an important looking camera, a man a little further along is talking to a lady on Skype, describing the view, everything he can see etc. A couple arrive and, oblivious to the people just behind them on the bench patiently waiting for the sunset, stand right in front of us, blocking the view and start taking photos. To add insult to injury they then lean against the rail with their backs to the splendid view intent on their mobile phones. Me and important camera man exchange glances. I'm just about to say something when the girl looks up from her mobile to find three resentful pairs of eyes upon her, cottons on to the situation and drags her partner away.
We linger a while in the square for the after sunset colours

and then head 'home' to wait for the moon.
