Piombino in May

On Friday morning it's sunny and we do some shopping at the small covered market in Piombino. There isn't a big choice, but 10 artichokes and a kilo of fresh, really fresh, sardines, suffice.

In the afternoon we drive to Salivoli and park near Cala Moresca to walk to Spiaggia Fosso Canne along the via dei Cavalleggeri, a walk we did two years ago but is always beautiful. New signs showing the routes and providing information about the flora have been added.

A less welcome addition is a dozen e-bikers. On the way back, it starts to spit with rain again so we go to Eurospin supermarket to get some more vegetables and some ricotta di pecora. We also discover they have a good choice of cooked meat in the Gastronomia section. It's drizzling a little and we stay in that evening.

On Saturday morning we go for a stroll around Piombino. There's a 'craft and antique' market in the main streets so we stroll around the centre and then head down to the little harbour and Piazza Bovio. There's an open water swimming competition: 10 kilometers. The sea isn't even calm, I'm comfortable with a vest, T-shirt and fleece, it's cloudy.....it seems an heroic sport, let alone in this weather.

By the time we get back and have lunch, it starts raining. I give up. I have a translation to do, and I don't often get to sit at a table to work at the computer with a background like that. By the time I've finished my head is aching, so I get myself a hot drink and then head out with the umbrella. The combination of hot milk with ginger and a dash of caffeine and fresh air with the sound of the sea works.

I'm ok for Incastrati on Netflix in the evening.
