Costa degli Etruschi May 2021 - Calafuria
Friday we get off to a late start and it's eleven before we park at Calafuria. A group is setting off just as we are and our paths cross for a while. The Calafuria walk is actually in the woods behind the coast.
We are following a Wikiloc walk that Andrea has found but there are lots of intersecting paths. We go up and then down again back towards the coast on a stretch of path with spectacular flowers and blue sea behind. It's the most and only panoramic part of the walk. The group has caught up with us and one of them points out some wild asparagus which we eat raw for the first time. The path passes below the bridges of the railway and the road with enormous white waves crashing onto the base. It seems a little dangerous, again, but we make a dash between waves and don't even get splashed. The rest of the walk is in the woods and as a picnic place we find nothing better than a covered well or cistern. Nevertheless the focaccia, raw ham and bread of Angolo dei Golosi are very good and the tiny almond biscuits surprisingly delicious.
Just before we get back to the car we have a look at the Morricone bay below. Enormous waves are crashing onto the rocks in a white sea of foam. We watch, mesmerized and exclaiming. I've used the word spectacular before so what am I left with? Awesome!
On the way back we take a detour towards Castiglioncello which turns out to be a waste of time. Enormous private villas, one way streets and impossible to park. We end up in the main square of Rosignano and walk as far as the white beaches in the hope of a Caribbean effect photo but the sea is rough and the waves are big even here, churning up the water into a milky brew.
We walk a while, sit a while, then walk back to the car, get some broad beans to add to our supper and head back to the apartment.
