East coast Sicily Day 9 Pozzallo Beach
The next morning we get off to a not particularly early start and check out the various fishmongers in Pozzallo. Selection and prices are a little disappointing after Milazzo. We want to go walking along the beach and were hoping in 'rosticceria' but it's apparently too early in the morning for that so we make do with some sort of pizzetta and focaccia.
We set off along the beach. Pozzallo is nothing special but the beach is superb.
A wide sandy beach of dark golden sand which is firm underfoot and absolutely ideal for walking. We head in the direction of Santa Maria di Focallo, occasionally there are one or two rocks to clamber over which divide the various sections of the beach and the few people around near Pozzallo become even fewer as we progress.
The beach is perfectly clean and free of rubbish, splendid but unfortunately not always the case in Sicily. The temperature is perfect for walking, a light breeze too. At one point a stream comes down into the sea and we wade through the shallow water, some men are fishing by wading out into the shallow water and casting their nets directly around them. It's fascinating to sit and watch them. As we are sitting there we see the first of the jumping fish. Every so often a largish fish jumps out of the waves and plunges back in. There's a lot of 'look','look!'. We continue up the beach which is gradually getting narrower with sand dunes and vegetation behind.
It's time for a stop and quick swim before our picnic lunch which is not very plentiful considering the kilometres and sea air. After 'lunch' and a rest we make our way back to Pozzallo, quite tired by the time we are dusting the sand off our feet.
We had consulted TripAdvisor for granita suggestions and make our way to Pasticceria Cappello where we have to make a difficult compromise between desire for granita, coffee and cannoli. We are also hungry from the scanty lunch and long walk so we decide for two cannoli, a cappuccino and granita of mulberries. The cannoli are excellent, filled to order but the granita of mulberries with whipped cream is absolutely exceptional. We savour ever last bit and drop of everything and sit a while in awe for the beauty of the beach, day and spectacular food. Sicily at its very best.
