West Coast Sicily Day 5 Favignana Cala Azzurra and south coast
We set off early, early with that convenient minibus and find Cala Azzurra delightfully empty when we arrive.
We take up position a little way along the small beach and despite the early hour and the air which is quite fresh I nerve myself and am soon in the water. I am not a good swimmer, I learnt late in small protected bays in Sardegna, but I stay close to the beach in safe bays in places where I can touch the sea bed and I enjoy it very much. The water, after the initial shock, is not at all cold and is so clear and transparent that it could be Sardegna. After, I dry off and we rest a while on the warm sand. We are not really beach people but even Andrea makes an exception for really beautiful beaches and this is one. A few people are starting to arrive and the sun is getting hotter.
When both have increased in intensity we make a move and get back on the minibus which takes us to the point on the south coast where we had given up two days before - Cala Rotonda.
The beach is busy and hot but fortunately there is a pinewood behind the beach, not perhaps perfectly clean but we sort out some stones to sit on and rest against the tree trunks with a pleasant view of the sea and are in pretty perfect picnic conditions.
Today is a decidedly slow day after all the walking the other days so we linger and look at the view and the people and then eventually set off along the coast to Cala Stornella, another pretty bay, then head all along the south coast. It's quiet, no-one around, there's a view over the two mini-islands Preveto and Galeotta, the road takes a short cut through a tunnel and our path continues along the coast. It's quite hot now but the breeze is pleasant and we soon arrive at Punta Lunga where we return to the Kiosko for a welcome and refreshing Crema al Caffe' and Latte di Mandorla.
It's then just a short walk back to Favignana town. Time for a short walk around and to get the ferry ticket for the next day, then we go back to the apartment to tidy up and pack. Tomorrow we go back to the mainland. We take up position a little way along the small beach and despite the early hour and the air which is quite fresh I nerve myself and am soon in the water.
