West Coast Sicily Day 4 Favignana Praia and Sunset at the Castle

The next day is Thursday and we decide to slow down and take it easy. In the morning we wander around Favignana town and do a little shopping, we walk around the port area and up and down the streets in the centre and we have a look outside the Tonnara and along the road beyond. There's a farm and a few cows grazing on what looks to be bare earth and parched grass with the port behind.

Then, we go back to the apartment to get some beach towels to go and sit on Praia beach. There are a few people, but certainly not a crowd, and also what look to be local people who are also swimming. It's relaxing watching the ferries arriving and departing from the port area and a few small boats moving around. Once I've got my bearings I take a short swim, the water is reasonably clean and transparent, definitely not cold, it's really rather pleasant.

After a rest we go back to the apartment where I cook some of the small local fish we bought earlier at the port. Our meals on these holidays are simple but satisfying - local fish, tomatoes, the excellent and cheap Sicilian fresh bread, fruit - figs when we can find them , or prickly pears which are Andrea's favourites or grapes or whatever else seems to be in season. After lunch we go back to the port to U Bar du Marinaru which has made a name for itself for the pistacchio coffee, that is expresso coffee with pistacchio cream. Why not? Unusual, and as most food in Sicily, delicious. The sun is high in the sky and we decide to go southern, that is to go for a long afternoon nap, the sound of the sea lapping from the cool of the sofa is enticing today. After, we prepare supper ready and then set off back up the hill, this time to arrive at the castle of Santa Caterina for sunset. I'm a little unsure about going to what looks to be an isolated place at dusk but naturally we are not the only ones to fancy an early evening stroll in search of views and photo opportunities and there are lots of people coming and going.

The castle is freely accessible and somewhat dilapidated in parts, you have to be careful where you put your feet and not to lean over walls unwisely. But it's nice to walk uphill again and the views really are spectacular.

Some cloud confuses the moment when the sun actually melts into the sea but then as we arrive back home there is a final blaze of unexpected colour. Recommended!
