Denia in February

On Friday morning there’s the fruit and vegetable market in Denia. We get there quite early, before there are many people around. There’s a good selection of everything from sprouts to Papaya and prices are only slightly higher than in Torrevieja.

We also have a look around the Mercado central which isn’t a boutique market although the prices of fish are a lot higher than at Mercadona in Torrevieja. We leave empty-handed and continue towards the castle. The evening before we strolled a few streets in Denia without finding the historical centre so now we go into the Tourist information office. A friendly lady gives us a brochure with a map and explains a route. We go past the town hall, a nice building in warm sandstone, and stop in at the two small museums: ethnographic and archaeological. It doesn’t take us long but they are both free. Then we walk around the two historical areas of Denia and go up to the entrance to the castle without actually going in. Lastly, we take the lady’s advice and visit the barrio near the sea for the view of the castle from below. The historical centre, especially the one between the castle and the sea, has not been fully restored. There are many abandoned buildings and I wonder why because Denia seems both popular and expensive as regards accommodation.

On the walk back home we stop at Consum for fish and for ‘rabo de toro’.

In the meantime, our kind host has brought us a new coffee machine because the other one wasn’t working. Coffee capsules arrive too, and we are all set up for our afternoon walk. This starts just a few metres from the apartment and is Paseo de les Rotes, about 4 km heading south along the coast from the Marina de Denia.

It’s not breathtaking but it’s an easy walk, pleasant, next to the sea, with no traffic, few people around. The wind has come up and there are a few clouds but the temperatures seem higher. I’ve stopped feeling the cold, anyway. Andrea stops to read and I go nearly to the end of the walk. There are fine views of the Montgò promontory. By the time we get back we’ve walked a total of 15 ½ kilomteres and it’s time for a rest.
