Puglia - Bari in April - Molfetta
It's Tuesday and we are back at the splendid covered market indulging in strawberries, asparagus, artichokes and several different types of fish including the famous octopus.
Having dealt with such essentials we go back to the 'loft' for our now customary early lunch.
Back on the road, well the rails, our destination today is Molfetta, about 20/25 minutes by train. As usual we arrive at the time of day when the rest of Puglia is eating, digesting or snoozing...
... So the town, with another pretty, clean, whitewashed historical centre, called Isola di San Andrea, is quiet and peaceful for wandering around.
We walk around and then come out onto the harbour side, where there is also the Duomo di San Corrado and old houses in the usual pale stone which make it very attractive.
We stop for coffee. Along the harbour it's very pleasant in the warm spring sunshine and we sit for a while until our attention is attracted by a lot of people and movement around a building just across from the harbour. Intrigued, we wander across and find it's the fish market which must have just opened and is bustling with activity. I know it's Tuesday so the locals must have been fresh-fish-less for 2 days but from the quantity of people, pushing and shouting one would have thought they'd been without for at least a whole Lent. It's fascinating, both the fish and the antics, some customers are even picking up the fish themselves and putting it in the bag to be weighed.
Back out in the sunshine we go to look at the Duomo di San Corrado which has now opened and is well worth a visit, with it's simple style, two belltowers and three domes
then wander back through the historical centre and up to the train station to go back to Bari.
