Chioggia in March Day 4
Wednesday is our last day so we explore some bits of Chioggia which we had missed so far. But first, the two obligatory stops at the fish market for scallops and red mullets and the bar for our second breakfast. Once the fish is in the fridge we walk to the ‘island’ of San Domenico and the church which is only open on Saturdays and from there along Fondamenta San Domenico, blessed by the warm morning sun. It’s an area with fewer restaurants, a few boat-related shops, nice for a stroll. From there we go along Riva Vena until we get to a bakery - Panifico Spagno, where, on a whim, I buy a couple of rolls and a hopeful looking unnamed longish cake based on almonds. We cross over by Porta Santa Maria and around to Piazzale Poliuto Penzo before going back to the apartment for lunch. Both the red mullets and the scallops are fresh and quick to cook in the oven. And the mysterious almond cake, consisting in a slightly salty flakey pastry shell and a rich marziapanny almond filling, is absolutely delicious!
In the afternoon we walk back across Ponte dell’Unione, this time turning right when we get to Sottomarina to walk along the Laguna del Lusenzo. I have come for the view, but walking in that direction at first, it is mostly of the apartment blocks of Borgo San Giovanni. A little further along and all the way back, instead, we are rewarded by a splendid view of Chioggia.
On the way back we have a look inside the wholesale fish market which is finishing the day’s activities and then return to Panificio Spagno for another almond cake – alas it is closed on a Wednesday afternoon. Fortunately we still have half left.
We wander back to the apartment. The promised clouds are accumulating so no sunset to see and that evening we stay in and rest.
