Off the beaten track in Andalucia - Algorrobo Costa
It's been a busy week and our first full day in Algorrobo is simply for strolling along the promenade. It's a sunny morning, windy but mild and so we turn right heading out of the apartment block. Talking of which, we're in one of those high rise apartment blocks which are a bit of an eyesore. There are four or five of them in a line, each one, I think, with over a hundred apartments. On this windy Sunday morning at the beginning of March only a handful seem occupied. Turning right takes us along the Paseo in the direction of Caleta de Velez. There's a small harbour and most of the buildings along the paseo are two or three storeys. At one point we can choose between the wide promenade as such and the beaten track actually on the beach. It's an almost urban landscape on one side and the beach is that grey colour typical of the area, on the other. But the sea is blue, the waves are crashing onto the beach, people are out strolling, jogging, cycling. It's nice. We wanted sea air, and we've got it. We walk about 4 kilometres and then head back for lunch as well as getting something ridiculously chocolatey from La Pasteleria below the apartment.
After lunch, more of the same, well, better. Going onto the Paseo we turn left, which takes us over the footbridge, along Mezquitilla, up a little past an urbanizacion above a bank a riot of colours - different shades of bougainvillea, yellow mimosas in full flower.
The path continues between the guard rail which protects from the main road (but there's very little traffic) around the promontory, where there are clumps of yellow flowers and then down to the hamlet of Lagos. Lagos is tiny, just a line of houses but there's a nice promenade with benches so we give up the search for a second coffee and sit and watch the waves on the beach, feeling the warm sun and relaxing.
We walk back, get a slice of cheesecake from the Pasteleria and go upstairs to the apartment for merienda to relax and watch the sea from there. A quiet day.
