Piombino in May - what to see

On Thursday it is still cloudy but fortunately not raining so in the morning we have a slow stroll around Piombino discovering a few corners we didn't know existed. We park in the usual square where parking is free, parcheggio palazzetto dello sport, the one where there's the market on Wednesday morning. From there we stroll through the centre and down to Piazza Bovio and the Faro. The view from here, with Elba Island in front is always worth a look. Heading north there's the small harbour or porticciolo with a few boats and the decorative fountain.

On the way up the hill from the porticciolo we stop for a look inside the church of the Misericordia. At the top of the slope is the Archeological museum, which we don't visit but in the square behind it the façade of the Chiesa di Sant'Anna is worth a look.

Two steps further, round the other side of the Archeological museum, there's a belvedere, with access to a stony beach below. We look at the view but don't go down. This is a slow morning so it's getting late.

Back in the centre we see someone coming out of a bakery with a piece of focaccia in each hand and while up until that moment I hadn't been thinking about food I suddenly realise I could faint if I don't eat focaccia immediately. 2€ for 2 pieces. It's excellent.

After consulting with Google Maps we eventually find the main church: Abbazia Concattedrale di sant'Antimo with the cloister next to it and a tiny, but free, Museo di Arte Sacra.  Everything is open and there's a nice atmosphere.

Doubling back towards the sea front we head up towards the Castle. It's closed, there are some official graffiti on the way up.

Despite the focaccia it is definitely time for lunch so we go back to the apartment for some leftover Cinta.

In the afternoon the sun isn't exactly shining but we can make out its hazy form behind the clouds so we sit on the balcony and relax and listen to the sound of the sea.

Later on, another stroll around Piombino and an uninspiring TooGoodToGo. But at least the rain keeps off .......
